Gemotions

The crisp autumn air carried a scent of woodsmoke when Mrs. Bell knocked on my door. Her usually bright eyes were clouded, her shoulders slumped. She didn't beat around the bush. "I was hoping," she began, her voice barely a whisper, "you'd consider felling the old elm." My jaw dropped.

I stumbled for a chair, feeling a peculiar dizziness wash over me. The elm was a landmark, a centerpiece of our shared backyard landscape. It provided shade, home to squirrels and a beautiful resting spot in my eyes. The thought of losing it was… discombobulating.

She offered a series of unconvincing excuses. Her explanation lacked weight, like smoke rings. I found myself speechless, adrift in a sea of bewilderment.
