The daisies, so innocent and simple, sat on the kitchen counter, a stark contrast to the state of chaos in which they'd arrived. James paused, halfway through making his coffee, his brow furrowed. He was not used to this.

He had no reason to receive flowers. He had no one that would send them, that he knew of. They were a complete enigma.

He tried to recall anything unusual from the past few days, anything that might explain the arrangement. He replayed conversations, glanced through his inbox, considered his recent activities. All came up empty. He suddenly felt exposed, bare.
