The discarded notebook lay open on the coffee table. Inside, in his neat handwriting, was a story. She, Maya, was the main character. The details were uncanny: the same scar on her knee, the same habit of leaving teacups everywhere, even the memory of a childhood pet, a hamster named Mr. Nibbles.

A coldness spread through her. The words felt like a cage, a carefully crafted prison. She picked up the pen he’d used and stared at it.

Her hands started to tremble. She glanced at the door, then back at the notebook. She couldn't decipher what this was meant to be, but it left a bitter tang on her tongue.
