The offer hung in the air, a silent question mark. His neighbor, Sarah, usually so absorbed in her own life, had never even acknowledged his presence. Now, she wanted to… garden? On his property? He felt a sense of disorientation, a mental fog settling over him.

He pushed his glasses up his nose, a habitual gesture. He squinted at the perfectly mown lawn, suddenly seeing it in a new, perhaps threatening, light. He felt a tremor run through him, a physical manifestation of his confusion.
