Clara choked on her coffee. The familiar bitterness did nothing to ground her. Her own words, staring back at her from the screen, felt like a prank. A cruel, elaborate joke. How? Why? She reread the introduction, a flush creeping up her neck.

Her hands were shaking as she frantically searched the website for a contact email, a phone number, anything. She felt a growing sense of detachment, as though her body was no longer her own. The world around her blurred, the edges softening like a watercolor painting left out in the rain. She slammed her laptop shut. The sudden silence was almost deafening.
