Gemotions

The call came just as Maria was about to leave for work. Her sister, Isabella, on the other end, sounded… different. Excited. And, Maria soon learned, a convert. She was joining the Sikh faith.

Maria stared out the window, her hand still clutching the phone. The morning sun seemed impossibly bright, the sounds of the city outside suddenly jarring. She felt a strange buzzing in her ears.

After she hung up, she went over to the window and leaned against it. She felt a prickling sensation on her skin, as if she were in the presence of an unknown force. She just stood there, staring at the street, unable to go to work.
