The world outside the window of the bus blurred into streaks of color. Sarah stared at the familiar landscape, but she didn’t see it. Her stomach churned. Each bump in the road felt like a physical blow. She clenched her jaw.

She felt the buzz of her phone, a small vibration against her thigh. She pulled it out, her fingers trembling. She swiped to open her email, the screen illuminating her face in the dim light.

She read the words, and the bus seemed to tilt on its axis. The air thickened. A bitter taste coated her tongue. The world swam.
