The phone felt heavy in his hand. John had called the office, several times. No answer. His usual anticipation for the upcoming meeting with Ms. Chen had turned to something akin to dread.

He paced the living room, the familiar furniture now appearing unfamiliar. Each step felt deliberate, his breath shallow. Her last email was vague, with no hints of a departure.
