The ornate clock above the reception desk seemed to mock him, each tick an agonizing reminder of the minutes slipping away. Daniel stared at it, willing time to slow down, or better yet, to rewind. He felt a throbbing sensation in his temples. Across the room, Chloe was sketching something in a notepad, completely absorbed. Daniel envied her ability to focus.

He checked his phone for the tenth time, though he knew there were no new messages. The job meant everything to him, to them. The thought of facing Chloe afterwards, regardless of the outcome, made him want to disappear.

He took a deep, shaky breath, trying to calm the feeling that was building in his chest.
