Gemotions

The champagne flute trembled in Amelia's hand, sloshing a little over the rim. She’d deliberately chosen a corner table, hoping to avoid any awkward encounters. The string quartet’s rendition of “Here Comes the Bride” was swallowed by the murmur of the crowd, but Amelia heard every note with a painful clarity. Her stomach felt like a tangled ball of yarn. She took a deep breath, trying to slow the frantic beat of her heart.

Across the room, she saw him. Liam. He was laughing, talking animatedly with a group of people. Amelia immediately wanted to disappear. She ducked her head, pretending to examine the floral arrangement on the table. The scent of lilies suddenly became overwhelming.

Her best friend, Sarah, bounced over, radiant in a bridesmaid’s gown. “Having a good time? You look a little… distracted.” Amelia forced a smile. "Just admiring the flowers." Sarah’s eyes narrowed playfully. “Liar.”
