The flickering neon sign of the diner cast an eerie glow on Ethan’s face. He sat hunched over the counter, the steam from his coffee doing little to thaw the icy grip of apprehension that gripped him. He stared at the salt shaker, tracing the familiar lines with a shaking finger. The anniversary party, and the argument that followed, felt years away, another lifetime.

He heard the bell above the door jingle, and his breath hitched. He didn't look up, instead feigning interest in the sugar packets. Then he heard her voice, "Ethan? Sorry, I'm late." It was Sarah.

He finally turned to look at her, her smile bright and open. He found himself wishing he could disappear.
