Sweat beaded on Maya's forehead, tracing paths down her temples. The gym felt stifling, the air thick with the scent of stale chalk and anticipation. She tapped her foot, a rapid staccato against the polished floor. Each thump echoed in the cavernous space, amplifying the silence that had fallen over the gathered athletes. Her gaze darted around, catching the faces of her competitors, each a mask of either supreme confidence or carefully controlled composure. Her stomach churned, a relentless flip-flop sensation. She wished she'd eaten something heavier than the meager banana she'd managed.

The coach's voice, when it finally cracked through the stillness, seemed to reverberate in Maya’s chest. He began the announcement, his words a slow, deliberate march toward what felt like an inevitable doom. Maya’s grip tightened on her water bottle, the plastic creaking under the pressure. Her breath hitched.

The first few names were called, each one a reprieve, a temporary stay of execution. Then, the silence returned, heavier now, laced with a sense of dread that settled in Maya's bones. Her name was not among them.
