The afternoon sun streamed through the window, but the warmth did little to penetrate the chill that had settled in Elizabeth's bones. She’d overheard a conversation at the water cooler. Mark, the new project manager, was earning a salary much higher than her.

She tapped her pen against her teeth, a rapid staccato against the silence of her office. Her fingers were twitching.

She closed her eyes, trying to visualize the meeting she’d need to have with her superior. Her heart skipped a beat as she imagined the conversation.
