Michael wiped a clammy hand on his jeans. The air in the basement was thick with the scent of mildew and something else...something metallic. He'd been exploring, trying to familiarize himself with his new purchase. This house, a Victorian monstrosity, held more secrets than he’d bargained for.

He tugged at a loose brick in the back of the coal cellar. It came away with a scraping sound that echoed in the confined space. He peered into the newly revealed opening. His heart thudded in his chest as if trying to escape. A dark void stared back at him.

He reached for his phone, fumbling in his pocket. The flashlight beam danced over rough-hewn stone walls. What had been hidden? Michael whispered a shaky, “Hello?” He swallowed hard. Silence was the only reply.
