"Well, here it is," Ethan said, attempting a casual tone that didn’t quite ring true. He shoved his hands in his pockets, his shoulders hunched. His sister, Chloe, was practically bouncing with anticipation. He felt a strange tingling in his fingertips.

The house seemed to hold its breath, waiting. He hadn't known their grandmother’s house had gotten so run down. The thought of stepping inside, of facing the echoes of the past, filled him with a curious mixture of dread and something akin to a morbid curiosity.

Chloe pushed the door open, the sound echoing in the stillness. Ethan followed her inside, each footstep a hesitant probe into the unknown.
