A crisp, cream-colored envelope landed on Amelia's doormat, its embossed lettering whispering of a time she’d tried so hard to forget. Her hands trembled slightly as she picked it up, the slick paper feeling alien against her calloused fingers. She flipped it over, checking for the return address, dread blooming in her chest like an unwanted flower. Just as she feared, it was her high school. The reunion invitation.

She retreated inside, the invitation clutched tightly in her fist. The familiar scent of her own home usually soothed her, but today it felt like the walls were closing in. She found herself pacing the living room, the rhythmic squeak of her sneakers on the hardwood floor echoing in the sudden silence. Each step felt heavy, each breath shallow.
