He stared at the ceiling, the stucco a blur above him. The weight in his chest had grown, a leaden anchor tethering him to the bed. James clutched the blanket, as though it could shield him. It had to be Alex. The way she had suddenly changed, become quieter, more thoughtful… it was uncanny.

He sat up, the movement abrupt and jerky. The room swam slightly into focus. The journal lay on the desk, its cover facing up. He envisioned Alex’s face, reading his deepest thoughts. The image sparked a raw, burning sensation in his throat. He felt a sudden, powerful urge to scream.
