From the moment the test arrived, Alex had a pit in his stomach. The kit lay unopened on the shelf for weeks. He found himself avoiding his parents, his mind racing with possibilities he had spent a lifetime pushing away. His fingers twitched, itching to act, but his legs felt like lead.

He knew his adoptive parents were loving, but a part of him had always felt disconnected. He’d always wondered about his biological family, about who he really was. He finally pulled the test kit down and laid it on the table.

He picked it up, turned it over and over, then looked at the directions. His pulse quickened. He placed it in his pocket and walked outside, feeling the warmth of the sun on his face. He’d do it later.
