Gemotions

The doorbell rang. Sarah jumped, her tea cup almost slipping from her grasp. She steadied herself and answered the door. The delivery man handed her a package, addressed to "Ms. Evelyn Reed." She mumbled a thank you, her voice sounding strained even to her own ears. Ms. Reed had moved out two years ago.

She closed the door, leaning against it for a moment, letting out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. Her skin prickled. What could possibly be inside? She carried the box to the living room, her steps slow and deliberate.

She didn't want to open it. She just didn't. Each second stretched, the anticipation a tangible weight. She circled it, hands clasped, unable to help but wonder what was inside.
