He hadn't intended to come. He’d told himself it was pointless. But here he was, standing across the street, watching the wrecking ball swing. He had a sudden urge to light a cigarette, even though he had quit years ago. His hands shook as he fumbled for a phantom pack in his pocket.

The sound of the approaching bulldozer filled him with a strange dread. He felt a pressure in his chest that made it hard to breathe. He watched, utterly frozen, as the first blow landed, and the bricks of the childhood home crumbled.

He felt a cold sweat break out on his forehead.
