The keys felt heavy in her hand as Amelia approached the front door. She fumbled with them, dropping them twice before finally managing to unlock the door. The familiar click echoed in the silent house, sending a shiver through her. She felt like an intruder, trespassing in a place that no longer belonged to her.

She closed her eyes, trying to recapture the feeling of safety she had known within these walls. Instead, she was assaulted by a whirlwind of disjointed images: laughter, tears, arguments, celebrations.

She felt a sudden urge to scrub the years away, to somehow erase the inevitable.
