The news report, flashing across the television screen, made her stomach clench. The familiar face of the anchor, the familiar voice, made her skin crawl. The words, carefully chosen, still managed to deliver the crushing blow. Her hero, the writer who had shaped her life, had been exposed for literary theft.

She sat on the edge of her sofa, frozen. She forgot to breathe for a moment. Her surroundings felt wrong, disorienting. She was adrift in a sea of shock and disbelief.
