He stared at the bill, the numbers blurring. A tight knot formed in his chest, making it hard to breathe. The tuition statement was a monster, growing in size with each passing moment.

The news had hit him like a physical blow. A misallocation of funds. The scholarship that paid for his books and supplies was no longer coming. He tried to swallow, but his throat had suddenly closed up.
