He stared at the blank screen, the cursor blinking mockingly. He was supposed to be writing a speech, but all he could think about was the rival birthday party that was also planned for today. Thomas couldn’t bring himself to start writing.

He tapped his fingers on the table, a rapid, insistent rhythm. He’d carefully crafted every aspect of his party, from the theme to the music to the food. He'd even hired a professional photographer to document the event.

A sense of impending doom settled over him. His mouth felt dry. He couldn't shake the idea that his party would be a failure. He began to rub his temples, trying to ward off the growing pressure that was building inside him.
