He adjusted his tie, tugging at the knot as if it were a noose. His mouth felt like cotton, and swallowing offered no relief. John watched his mother greet another guest, her face alight with laughter. He imagined her expecting a heartfelt tribute. He wished he'd prepared something better.

His legs felt unsteady as he navigated the crowded room. Every familiar face seemed to scrutinize him. He’d practiced the speech in the mirror, but now, the words seemed to vanish from his mind. He was losing his confidence.

He wished he could simply fade into the background, but the emcee was already calling his name. He felt a tremor in his hand as he reached for the microphone.
