He felt his stomach twist, like a stubborn knot refusing to unravel. The meeting was in five minutes, and David knew he needed to appear calm, collected. Across the conference table, Sarah, the project lead, was already chatting animatedly with the regional manager.

“So, Sarah,” the manager began, “what do you think of these revised proposals?” David’s throat constricted. He hated this.

Sarah replied, “I think it's… interesting.” David’s hands clenched into fists under the table. His mind raced. He remembered a summer, years ago.

“We actually went to Camp Hawthorne together, didn't we, David?” Sarah asked, her voice light and casual. His cheeks flushed. He could feel the blood pounding in his ears. He was caught.
