The attic air tasted of dust and forgotten things. Amelia’s fingers, cold despite the summer heat, traced the embossed lettering on the manila envelope: “Personal - Do Not Open.” A tremor ran through her. Her mother’s handwriting, neat and precise, stared back at her. Inside, she knew, lay the truth.

She sat on a rickety wooden stool, the envelope resting on her lap like a hot coal. The attic, usually a place of childhood wonder, now felt oppressive. Sunbeams sliced through the gloom, illuminating swirling dust motes that seemed to dance in a frenzied ballet. Her breath hitched.

Her hand finally moved, reaching for the flap. It felt as if her own flesh was about to be peeled away. Why had she started this? Curiosity, yes, but also a growing fear she couldn't name. She slid her nail under the sealed edge and broke the bond.
