The small, chipped mug felt unusually warm in Maria’s grip. She wrapped her hands around it, seeking some measure of comfort. Across the table, Liam was packing, a whirlwind of clothes and books. The apartment was a mess. His eyes darted around, making sure he hadn't forgotten anything.

She’d offered to help, but her movements felt clumsy and slow. Every box, every packed item, was a physical manifestation of the impending separation. She took another sip of her tea, the Earl Grey doing little to soothe the tightness in her chest.

She watched him, her best friend, the person who knew her better than anyone, preparing to leave. She felt hollow.
