The email arrived late, blinking menacingly in her inbox. It was from *him*. She felt a sudden, inexplicable heat in her face. The screen seemed to swim, the characters blurring momentarily. She swiveled away from the laptop, as if physical distance would help.

She got up and paced the small confines of her apartment, her hands clasped tightly behind her back. Why now? Why after all this time? She ran a hand through her hair, tangling the strands. The anticipation was a physical ache, a knot forming in the pit of her stomach.
