The letter lay on the kitchen table, its creamy envelope a stark contrast to the usual mess. It had been staring at her all morning, an unsettling presence. Now, she felt a mounting pressure in her chest. Her leg bounced, a rapid staccato rhythm against the wooden floor. She couldn't focus on anything.

She’d put off going to the old house for years, and now, this. She’d made coffee but it sat cold. She finally grabbed her keys, her hands shaking slightly. The drive was a blur, each passing mile a torment.
