The key trembled in Mark’s hand as he unlocked the front door. The detective, a man with tired eyes and a weary voice, had just informed him the house had been the site of a brutal robbery, the previous owners, old Mr. and Mrs. Henderson, tied up and left for days before being found. He swallowed hard, the information sitting like a stone in his gut.

He stepped inside, the silence deafening. A chill ran down his spine despite the warm afternoon light. He pictured the scene, replaying in his mind what the detective had described.

He checked all the locks again, even the small windows. He really didn’t want to be alone in here.
