The realtor's words, "a tragic accident, a fall down the stairs," echoed in David's ears as he walked through the living room. His palms felt damp. He had envisioned his family here, laughter echoing through the hallways. Now, all he saw was a potential hazard, the stairs looming like a menacing presence.

He touched the smooth banister, his fingers tracing the wood. He could not shake the image of someone tumbling down those same stairs, their life ending. He felt a powerful urge to run out the door.

He backed away slowly, his feet feeling heavy, as if the house itself was trying to keep him there. He had to think.
