My coffee cup trembled in my hand, sloshing a dark stain onto the pristine white table. This was just…awkward. The air conditioning was on full blast, yet a sheen of sweat coated my forehead. I fiddled with the strap of my bag, trying to find some semblance of ease.

“Come on in, Sarah,” he said from the doorway, his voice calm and measured. He gestured towards the oversized armchair. The room was bland, filled with tasteful art and soft lighting. I forced a smile and entered, my legs feeling like jelly.

I found myself struggling to meet his gaze. What if he still remembered? What if he laughed? My heart hammered against my ribs with each passing second. I cleared my throat, feeling the dryness there.
