"Well, this is unexpected," Mr. Carter muttered, picking up the small, intricately carved wooden bird. The package had arrived this morning. It was from a student who had, sadly, passed away many years ago. It had been mailed by her parents.

He held the bird in his hands, examining the details. The carving was exquisite, a hummingbird. He remembered the girl's love of the natural world. He sat down heavily in his armchair, a deep ache in his chest.

His gaze drifted to the window, the world outside a blur. His throat constricted, and he felt a tear escape.
