The numbers on the report card swam before Jake's eyes. An "F" in his favorite class - creative writing. A surge of hot, angry blood rushed to his face. He felt his face flush as if exposed to fire. He’d spent hours on the assignments, pouring his heart and soul into each story. He knew he'd done poorly on the final exam. He'd sensed it. But this… This was a punch to the gut.

He slammed his fist on the table, the sound echoing in the otherwise quiet room. He stood, pacing back and forth, fueled by a simmering resentment. Why? What had he done wrong?

He wanted to scream, to lash out, to blame someone, anyone. The unfairness of it all choked him. He felt betrayed by the subject he loved.
