He paced in his living room, watching through the window as Mr. Rodriguez approached. The branches of the pine tree cast long, ominous shadows across the lawn. He stopped abruptly, his breath catching in his throat.

He tugged at the collar of his shirt, suddenly feeling constricted. He ran his fingers through his hair, leaving it standing on end. He should have mowed the lawn; it looked unkempt.

The doorbell rang, its shrillness startling. He jumped. He took another deep breath, his chest aching. He plastered a smile on his face and went to answer the door.
