The doorbell chimed, a shrill sound that made Sarah jump. She peered through the peephole, heart suddenly hammering against her ribs. A delivery man, floral bouquet in hand. Her palms immediately began to sweat, and she wiped them on her jeans before opening the door. “For you, ma’am,” he said, extending the vibrant arrangement of lilies and roses. No card. A flush of heat crept up her neck. Who? Why?

She accepted the flowers with a shaky smile, the scent overwhelming. She brought them inside, placing them precariously on the kitchen counter. Her gaze flitted around her apartment, as if expecting someone to be hiding, watching. The silence felt thick, expectant. She felt a prickling sensation at the back of her neck. Was it him? Could it be? She reached for her phone, a strange fluttering in her stomach.
