The humid summer air felt suffocating as Mia sat on the porch swing, the novel heavy in her lap. Her gaze kept darting towards the front door, half-expecting to see Ethan walk through it. He should be home any minute. Her lips were pressed together tightly.

The story was about them, or at least, a warped version of them. Their arguments, their quiet moments, even the way she drank her coffee in the morning, all captured in intricate, and often unflattering, detail. Her stomach churned.

She felt a sudden urge to run away, to hide. She closed her eyes, trying to block out the images, the words, the hidden truth that lay within the pages. She knew she couldn't. She had to keep reading, to know the full extent of the lie.
