The rustle of leaves in the breeze sounded far too loud as Liam watched Mr. Peterson, his neighbor, head towards his house. His breathing became shallow. He had been planning on enjoying the peace and quiet of his home.

Mr. Peterson began his proposal, talking about sunshine and the benefits of shared space, his words like a distant hum. Liam’s hands began to sweat. He tried to control his breathing, but it was no use.

He glanced around, as if searching for an escape. He pictured the change – the altered view, the constant reminder of… someone else. He shifted his weight from one foot to the other.

He nodded slowly, feeling a coldness grip his chest. “Yes… yes, of course,” he stammered, his words barely audible. The words tasted like ash.
