He stared at the email, the screen's glow reflecting in his wide eyes. His fingers, usually so quick on the keyboard, hovered over the delete button, unmoving. A tightness constricted his chest, making it difficult to draw a full breath. The words swam before him: "Opportunity to Purchase."

He ran a hand through his already disheveled hair, the gesture more a habit than a conscious act. His pulse quickened. He imagined the other tenants, the arguments, the bidding wars. His comfortable routine, his carefully curated life within those walls, felt suddenly precarious.

The kitchen clock ticked loudly, each second a hammer blow against his composure. He picked up his phone, then hesitated, the urge to call his sister battling the desire for solitude. He needed air, needed to think, needed to get away from the four walls that now felt like they were closing in.
