The lawyer’s words echoed in Leo's head, each syllable a tiny stab. He fiddled with the cap of his pen, clicking it repeatedly, a staccato rhythm against the silence. His apartment, once a sanctuary, now felt like a cage.

He ran a hand across the smooth surface of his desk, the familiar texture failing to soothe him. The legal jargon in the documents seemed to twist and morph before his eyes. He felt a growing sense of dread, a feeling that something precious was about to be taken away.

He pushed back from the desk, abruptly, the chair scraping against the floor. He needed to be alone. He needed to understand. He wanted to feel safe. He rose and walked to the window, staring out at the cityscape, feeling utterly isolated.
