The sound of the drill was almost hypnotic, a rhythmic hum that somehow lulled Mark into a state of quiet contemplation. He found himself drawn to the window, watching the construction crew with a strange sense of fascination. He had moved away from his hometown years ago.

He was surprised by the sudden urge to contact his old friends, the ones he'd grown up with, built tree forts with. It was as if the building work next door was a trigger, unlocking a flood of recollections. He looked them up on social media, suddenly curious to know where they were now, what they had been doing.

He spent the rest of the day looking at photos, sharing memories. He went outside, walked to the neighbour's house, and found himself talking to the construction workers. The work in front of him wasn't his, but it felt familiar, comforting.
