The email was a bitter pill, dissolving slowly in Leo's gut. He ran a hand through his hair, a gesture that did little to ease the ache spreading through him. His apartment felt sterile, empty. He longed for something solid, something tangible. His thoughts went back to his childhood home.

He found himself wandering into the kitchen, drawn by an unspoken desire. He pulled open the drawer that held his mother’s old cookbook. The pages were stained with grease and flour, each mark a testament to meals shared, laughter echoing around the table. He flipped to the recipe for his favorite chicken pot pie, a comfort food born from a place he knew he could never return to.

The aroma of cinnamon and spices, a familiar embrace, lingered in the air as he breathed deeply. He could almost feel the warmth of the oven on his face, the clatter of his mother's pots and pans. He carefully placed the book back in the drawer and closed it, unable to face the task.
