The weight of the helmet felt heavier than usual on David’s head. He walked onto the football field, the sun a blazing spotlight on his face, the noise of the crowd a low hum. It was all so familiar, yet everything was different. He had been a linebacker, the bone-jarring hits, the intensity of the games. Now, he was being moved to offensive tackle.

He watched the other players warm up, their movements, so natural, so ingrained. The smell of the grass, the taste of the sweat dripping into his mouth – they were all constant reminders of what was.
