“I didn't mean to,” Michael mumbled, his voice barely a whisper. The professor’s words, the gravity of his situation, crashed down on him. His thoughts drifted back to the carefree days of high school, when everything felt possible. The anticipation of college, the excitement of new beginnings. He'd ruined everything.

He remembered the feel of the sun on his face, the taste of salty air after swimming in the ocean. The camaraderie of the football team, the shared victories and defeats. He pulled at the thread of his sweater, a nervous tic. The weight of his actions now seemed unbearable.
