The silence of his apartment was deafening. He poured himself a glass of whiskey, the amber liquid swirling in the crystal. He sat in his favorite armchair, staring at the framed photograph on the mantelpiece. The team photo.

He picked up the glass. He remembered the feeling of accomplishment. The pride. He saw himself, young and vibrant, the picture of health. The picture seemed to mock him, a symbol of what he had hoped would become.

He had expected more. He took a long, slow sip, the warmth spreading through his chest. He closed his eyes, remembering the taste of victory, the camaraderie, the feeling of belonging. A deep sadness settled within him, heavy and unyielding.
