The invitation felt rough in Amelia's hand, a stark contrast to the smooth, glossy ones that had been popping up in her mailbox lately. She glanced around her kitchen, the morning light catching the dust motes dancing in the air. The scent of cinnamon, usually comforting, felt cloying today. It was supposed to be her birthday, and the party, the surprise party her friends had been planning… it wasn’t happening. A simple text message had shattered the anticipation.

She opened the cupboard, her fingers tracing the rim of an old teacup, chipped from years of use. It was the same one her grandmother had always used. She remembered the warmth of the tea, the clinking of the spoon, the stories shared around the kitchen table.

Her hand trembled slightly as she set it down. She wandered to the window, watching the familiar street below. The park across the road seemed to hum with unseen memories, echoing with laughter and the scent of freshly cut grass. She could almost see herself, a much younger version, chasing after a bright red balloon.
