The elevator doors opened, and Michael found himself standing in front of his old college. The familiar red brick felt like a comforting embrace. Ben's salary, leaked from a careless colleague, had been a blow, but somehow, seeing the place where it all began made things hurt less.

He reached out and traced the outline of a weathered stone in the facade. He remembered his first job. He remembered the feeling of possibility that had once filled him, a feeling like the city lights he could see from his dorm room window.

He smiled at the memory of his college friend, the dreams they’d shared. The weight of the present seemed to momentarily lift, replaced by a lightness he hadn't known he missed.
