The sun was setting, casting long shadows across the living room. James walked through the space, his movements slow, deliberate. He stopped in front of the fireplace, tracing the lines of the brickwork with his fingers. He remembered Christmas mornings, the crackling fire, the scent of pine.

He reached for a box on the mantelpiece, opening it to reveal a collection of his grandmother's trinkets: a tiny music box, a tarnished silver locket, a worn photograph. He held them, each one a tangible link to a past that felt both distant and incredibly close. He closed his eyes.
