The digital clock blinked 3:00 AM, the red numbers mocking Sophia’s wakefulness. Finding that her journal had been read by her roommate, Jessica, had brought back a sensation she hadn’t felt since she was a little girl, clinging to her mother’s skirt at a school play.

Sophia wrapped her arms around herself, trying to ward off the sudden chill. She pictured her old bedroom, the familiar posters on the wall, the comforting weight of her childhood quilt.

She closed her eyes, trying to conjure the warmth of her grandmother's hugs. She should have trusted her instincts. The need to rebuild that feeling of security was overwhelming.
